Tax-Smart Giving Strategies

Generosity and wisdom make a beautiful pair. If you plan to give before year-end, a few small choices can amplify both impact and tax benefit.

  • Give appreciated assets. Donating investments held longer than a year can let you avoid capital gains taxes while deducting the full value.

  • Bundle donations. If you give generously but don’t itemize annually, consider “bunching” multiple years of giving into one to maximize deductions.

  • Use Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs). If you’re over 70½, you can direct IRA distributions straight to charity—satisfying part of your RMD and reducing taxable income.

Beyond strategy lies something deeper: joy. Behavioral science shows giving activates the brain’s reward centers, producing what researchers call the “helper’s high.”

One couple I work with sets aside funds for their church and a local food pantry each fall. “We treat it like a harvest,” they said. “It reminds us of how much we’ve been given.”

Tax efficiency matters—but heart matters more. Smart giving simply ensures your dollars reach further and your gratitude grows stronger.
